Technique Tips
1. Know your stroke count on the backstroke and be confident when you turn. Don't turn and look for the wall.
2. Try to swim with a "near perfect stroke" even when you are tired. A sloppy stroke is a slow stroke.
3. Learn not to breathe on your last stroke into a freestyle flip turn or on the first stroke out of the freestyle flip turn. Train yourself to do this and your times will improve!
4. Swim tall, this means that you maximize your size in the water. Try to swim with long strokes not short one. Swimming with long strokes is one of the most important things a swimmer can do if they want to reach their true swimming potential.
5. Have a tight streamline of every wall even in practice!
6. Use your legs when you swim! Many swimmers will use their legs sometimes or not at all because it takes a lot more effort, but in order to swim fast you need to use your legs the entire race.
7. Do not let others distract you in practice. The more focused you are in practice, the more success you will have at the next swim meet.
8. Treat every turn in practice as if it were a turn in a meet. The way you perform in practice is a direct correlation with how you perform in a meet.
9. Treat every finish in practice as if it were a finish in a meet. When you finish, do you swim into the wall each time or do you stop before you get to the wall? If you stop you are missing out on a "golden opportunity" to perfect your finish. Many races are won or lost on the finish!
10. Bilateral breath on your freestyle. This will make you faster and will help to prevent shoulder injury. At first it may be hard, but the
more you practice it, the easier it will be!
11. Make sure you are doing all of the lifts and sets when weightlifting, so when it is time to taper you can benefit from the rest. If you haven't beendoing the work all season, you won't benefit from the taper.
12. Stay after practice to get extra help. I'm willing to stay after with anyone who asks for extra help!
13. A real swimmer would not pull on the lane lines, turn around in the middle of the pool or undercount the number of lengths they have swum. Remember if you cheat in practice you are cheating yourself out of your best times at the next swim meet.
12. Remember to finish the set. Go to the bathroom or get a drink in between sets. Stopping in the middle of a challenging set takes the challenge out of the set and in turn doesn't benefit you.
